Dental Sealants – Another Tool For Cavity Prevention

Posted on June 9, 2017

Dental Sealants in Tarpon Springs

Dental patients in the Tarpon Springs, East Lake, and Clearwater areas know that regular brushing and flossing are essential for optimal oral health. However, the bristles of your toothbrush can’t reach into every small groove and depression in your teeth, especially the really bumpy back teeth. That’s where sealants can be invaluable.

Dental sealants are a plastic material that is applied by your Trinity dentist. This material is a resin that bonds to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, mainly in the pits and fissures. The plastic acts as a shield against acids and plaque that can damage the enamel.

Many Palm Harbor residents might think that sealants are only for children and teenagers, but they can actually be beneficial for adults as well. If you are wondering if sealants are right for you, speak with your Tarpon Springs, East Lake, or Clearwater dentist. This simple dental procedure can improve your oral health by protecting the surfaces that are particularly vulnerable to decay.

Many Florida dental insurance providers include dental sealants as a covered benefit, so check with your provider if you are considering them. If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about financing options. Because they can prevent cavities, dental sealants can save you money in the long run.

I’m Dr. Prestige Dentistry, an experienced Palm Harbor dentist. Thank you for visiting my dental blog. At our office we serve the Trinity area by offering:

dental implants
sedation dentistry
restorative dentistry
invisible braces
endodontics

If you have any questions about these or other cosmetic dental procedures, call us today at 727-478-0488 to schedule a consultation.  Our modern staff would be happy to assist you.

What You See And What You Don’t

Posted on June 2, 2017

invisible braces Trinity

If you have had restorations, orthodontia, or a complete smile makeover, you want people to notice the final outcome – your remarkable smile. There is a lot, however, that is going on behind the scenes. Today’s post talks about three essential smile makeover components that are not readily apparent when you smile, but are often necessary for the successful result.

Invisible Braces
Not everyone in Palm Harbor wants to flash a metal smile while their teeth are being straightened. Invisible braces keep your secret safe because it is nearly impossible to see them while they are being worn.

White Fillings

If you have metal fillings, you might be interested in replacing them with composite fillings that match your surrounding teeth. You can’t undo the decay, but you can make the metal disappear.

Tooth Implants

A dental implant is a metal (usually titanium) rod implanted into the bone to replace the missing root after a tooth extraction. The crown and supporting structure are securely and permanently attached to the post. Titanium is super strong and well tolerated by the jaw bone. When the final crown is placed, your new tooth is indistinguishable from the others. Dental implants have many vital advantages over dental crowns. If you are missing teeth, schedule a consultation with Dr. Prestige Dentistry to discuss your options.

Prestige Dentistry is located at 4140 Woodlands Pkwy Ste A in Palm Harbor. We have been providing quality dental care since 1986. In addition to the services previously mentioned, ask us about veneers, tooth whitening and sedation dentistry. We look forward to meeting you. Call us today at 727-478-0488.

Palm Harbor Dental News: Regular Cleanings And Heart Health

Posted on May 26, 2017

Palm Harbor Dental News Regular Cleanings And Heart Health

Visiting Prestige Dentistry in Palm Harbor for regular dental check-ups and cleanings every six months can seem inconvenient and unnecessary at times, but you may benefit in important ways you never imagined.

A recent study showed that people who had their teeth professionally cleaned at least once every two years were 24 percent less likely to have a heart attack, compared to those who skipped appointments.

While the study could simply confirm that those Trinity people who dutifully schedule regular dental cleanings also practice healthy habits like exercising and eating right, there is additional evidence of a relationship between oral health and heart health.

Common problems like inflammation with gum disease are linked to hardening of the arteries and other tissue inflammations which can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Former American Heart Association President Ralph Sacco, MD, (who did not participate in the study mentioned previously) said:

“Something as simple as having good dental hygiene – brushing, flossing, and having regular cleanings – may be good for your heart and brain health.1

While the study found that patients who schedule cleanings yearly reap the most health benefits, Prestige Dentistry recommends coming in for check-ups and cleanings every six months to catch potential problems early, saving Palm Harbor patients time and money. Regular dental cleanings also brighten and whiten teeth, making your smile look its best.

To schedule a deep cleaning with our modern dental hygienist at Prestige Dentistry, call
727-478-0488 today!

Crooked Teeth And Cavities

Posted on May 19, 2017

fast braces Palm Harbor

Many dental patients in and around Trinity hold the belief that orthodontists only change the look of your teeth. Consequently, they think that the only reason to find an orthodontist is if you are interested in cosmetic dentistry.

The fact is that your ability to clean your teeth is enhanced when your teeth are straight and uncrowded.

When uneven teeth begin to crowd together, it becomes difficult to make essential daily cleanings effective. And, when your teeth aren’t cleaned properly, problems with plaque build-up, cavities, and gum disease generally ensue.

If you are curious if your teeth are crowding or if your bite is not aligned, then you need to visit your Palm Harbor dentist. Your dentist can evaluate whether or not you need to see an orthodontist, and then recommend one near you.

Also, if you feel that the appearance of your teeth is an issue, ask your dentist about a smile makeover. There are numerous unprecedented cosmetic dentistry procedures handled daily. These include teeth whitening, veneers, dental implants, crowns, and more!

Hello, my name is Dr. Prestige Dentistry. My modern local dental practice, Prestige Dentistry, is located at 4140 Woodlands Pkwy Ste A in Palm Harbor. I am devoted to healthy, stunning smiles. We are currently accepting new patients, so if you are in or around Trinity, give us a call at 727-478-0488.

Our modern team can answer any questions you have about our top services, which are:

Mini Implants May Be Right For You

Posted on May 12, 2017

Mini Dental Implants Can Help Your Smile in 34685We are Prestige Dentistry in Palm Harbor. Today’s topic is mini dental implants, sometimes called “immediate implants”.

Though they are not as well known as traditional dental implants, mini implants are also being used successfully in the Palm Harbor area to improve smiles. Like their larger diameter counterparts, mini implants can support a restoration for one or more missing teeth or replace a bridge or fixed denture. Denture wearers benefit significantly from these slip-free dental implants that are anchored securely in the jaw bone.

In some cases, a patient is unable to receive traditional full-size dental implants due to insufficient bone thickness. There are also mini implant patients who are not able to undergo dental implant surgery due to health issues. These patients are often excellent candidates for the mini version.

The placement of toothpick-size mini dental implants can sometimes be done in one dental visit. The placement usually requires no incisions or stitches. Recovery time, if required, is usually very short. Most patients are able to eat dinner that evening.

Don’t let the word “mini” fool you; your smile can receive a maximum upgrade with mini dental implants. Call Prestige Dentistry at 727-478-0488 to schedule a consultation.

7 Ways To Fix A Tooth

Posted on May 5, 2017

fix broken tooth Palm Harbor

In a perfect world, each of your cherished teeth would stay healthy, strong, and brilliantly white throughout your life. The truth is, however, that most Florida men and women will need to restore a tooth at some point.

A tooth can be compromised by tooth decay, enamel erosion, a chip or crack, gum disease, or injury. Sometimes old restorations break and need to be replaced or root canals performed decades ago develop an abscess.

Here are 7 different options for repairing a damaged tooth:

Dental Bonding
Bonding, officially called direct composite veneers, is used to correct minor cosmetic problems – small chips, cracks, discoloration, and spaces between teeth. A skilled cosmetic dentist applies moldable tooth-colored composite resin and shapes as desired. The resin is then cured with a special light to harden and adhere tightly to the tooth. Composite bonding is commonly the most cost-effective option for improving healthy teeth with minor cosmetic issues.

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin tooth-shaped fronts that are permanently bonded to your natural teeth. They are used when the underlying tooth is structurally sound and free of dental caries. A beautiful veneer can cover a chip or crack or fix the alignment of a tooth that appears slightly off kilter as compared to surrounding teeth.

Fillings
Modern white fillings are strong and inconspicuous. A minimally invasive filling at Prestige Dentistry leaves you with more of nature’s prime dental material — your own enamel and dentin. We can also replace old amalgam fillings with white fillings. This makes your teeth look a lot better every time you open your mouth. Get rid of all that metal!

Inlays and Onlays
A traditional filling is shaped and molded after it is applied to the tooth. Because inlays and onlays are fabricated in a dental lab, they are commonly called indirect fillings. A less invasive inlay or onlay may be used instead of a traditional filling or, in some cases, a crown. Inlays are applied to just the center of the biting surface of a tooth (not to a cusp or point) and are generally smaller than onlays. An onlay restores one or more cusps of a tooth.

Crowns
A crown replaces the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring appearance, durability, and function. A crown is ordinarily necessary for a tooth that has had a root canal, a tooth with severe decay, or as the replacement tooth in a dental bridge. Attaching a crown to the abutment is the final step of a tooth implant procedure. Crowns can be made of all metal (such as gold), porcelain-fused-to-metal, all ceramic, or all resin.

Soft Tissue Grafts
Gum recession puts teeth and underlying bone at risk. Soft tissue grafting can cover the exposed root of a tooth to prevent further damage. Gum surgery is also handled for cosmetic reasons such reshaping a gumline to eliminate a “gummy” smile.

Dental Implants
What if a tooth has to be extracted because it is beyond saving? For many Prestige Dentistry patients, a dental implant anchored into the bone is the prime solution. A tooth implant consist of a strong metal post (artificial root), abutment (connecting piece), and beautiful crown. A dental implant had many advantages over a dental bridge. They are stronger, provide virtually natural function, impede bone recession, and do not affect the surrounding teeth. For patients with multiple missing teeth, tailor-made implant-anchored dentures can be established in any configuration necessary.

For more details about any of these procedures, call Prestige Dentistry at 727-478-0488. Thanks for visiting the Prestige Dentistry blog. We appreciate your interest in our Palm Harbor dental practice.

The Dangers Of Oral Infections

Posted on April 21, 2017

oral infection exam Trinity

“It’s just a small sore, it will go away.”
“I’m too busy right now, I’ll go to a dentist later.”
“A little sensitivity is no big deal.”

It happens to most Palm Harbor residents at least once in their life. Your teeth become sensitive to cold drinks. A tooth develops a dull ache. A sore on the gums doesn’t heal up. An injured tooth darkens. A pain develops in your lower sinus area.

This is definitely not a situation where the “ignore it and it will go away” mentality is wise. If the pain is the result of a detrimental infection, there are grave consequences of postponing treatment. Oral bacterial infections can destroy teeth, gums and jawbone and even lead to life-threatening sepsis. In fact, prior to the 19th century, tooth decay-related infection was a leading cause of death.

An oral infection doesn’t always cause pain. Bad breath, fever, swelling in the gums, glands or jaw, or a strange taste in the mouth can indicate the presence of an infection.

If an infection is caught and treated early, there may be no additional problems. However, usually the infection is the result of a dental issue that needs to be treated. If the infection is caused by tooth decay, the decay will have to be removed and the tooth filled. If the decay has penetrated to the pulp of the tooth, a root canal may be necessary.

The infection may be the result of a pocket of undrained pus called an abscess. Pus is a by-product of the immune system’s efforts to fight infection and consists of dead white blood cells.

Mouth sores have various causes including an infection or virus. White patches in the mouth can indicate thrush (an oral yeast infection). All of these conditions can be treated – but you need to see your dentist.

Thank you for visiting the blog of Prestige Dentistry. If you have any signs of oral infection, or haven’t had a dental exam in the past year, we encourage you to schedule an appointment by calling our office today at 727-478-0488.

7 Steps For A Healthy Smile

Posted on April 14, 2017

Trinity Extreme Smile Makeover

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Benjamin Franklin coined this phrase in the 1730s as advice for fire safety. However, like all timeless quotes, it applies to many more aspects of modern Palm Harbor life, particularly dental health.

Keeping your smile beautiful and healthy is done most effectively with preventative measures. Some of the most important guidelines are highlighted here.

1. Make a habit of brushing your teeth. Do it twice a day for 2 minutes. Be sure to use an ADA approved toothpaste and toothbrush. They can be purchased at any Palm Harbor, Florida area drugstore.

2. Don’t forget the floss! Flossing between your teeth daily will do wonders for your teeth and keep your gums healthy too.

3. Wear a protective mouthguard whenever you are engaged in an activity where your mouth could possibly be damaged. This includes many Trinity recreation league and school sponsored sports.

4. Don’t smoke. As if you needed yet another reason not to!

5. Avoid piercing your lips, tongue, cheek, or any other part of your mouth that someone decided you should shove a metal bar through. Piercings put you at greater risk for chipped teeth, infection and nerve damage. It’s a dangerous Palm Harbor fashion that you’ll want to avoid.

6. Stay away from snacks that have a lot of sugar or starch.

7. Schedule regular dental visits, of course!

My name is Dr. Prestige Dentistry
. Helping my dental patients establish good habits is important to me, and so is helping them achieve the smile they want with cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers, teeth whitening and complete smile makeovers.

Prestige Dentistry has been serving the Tarpon Springs, East Lake, and Clearwater area since 1986. If you are in the market for an exceptional dentist, we invite you to contact us at 727-478-0488 so we can make an appointment for you.

How Dental Implants Are Changing Dentures

Posted on April 7, 2017

Changing Dentures in Palm Harbor If you are one of the many Palm Harbor denture wearers, you know that they are not the ideal solution for missing teeth.

The problems with dentures include slipping, gum irritation, trouble eating and talking, bone loss, and inability to taste food due to a covered palate. Clearly, dentures do not feel and function like natural teeth.

Good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups can help you avoid the need for dentures later in your life, but other factors can make dental replacements an inevitability.

The good news? Modern dental implant technology offers a better tooth restoration solution. If you currently wear traditional dentures and are not happy with them, implant anchored dentures may dramatically change your life. Your chewing ability will be similar to that of natural teeth and you will be able to eat hard foods again.

How about a thick T-bone at your favorite Palm Harbor steakhouse? In addition to being able to enjoy your meal, you will avoid the embarrassment of having your dentures rattle around in your mouth in public.

Before you pay for another denture reline, ask your Palm Harbor dentist about the possibility of dental implants.

Attention Palm Harbor denture wearers: there is life after dentures with tooth implants!

Come see us at Prestige Dentistry at 4140 Woodlands Pkwy Ste A in Palm Harbor, 34685 for more information about dental implants.
