Let Your Kids Fight The Evil Cavity-Causing Sorceress

Posted on September 22, 2017

children

Use your child’s smartphone or tablet as a tool to help them establish effective dental hygiene habits. In 2014, a coalition of organizations dedicated to public health introduced a mobile app called Toothsavers to make brushing and flossing fun for children.

In the exciting Toothsavers game (for ages 3 – 6), players try to save characters from an evil sorceress who inflicts cavities and other dangerous mouth miseries on residents of her kingdom. Players use their fingers to ‘clean’ the characters’ teeth in the game. The game is designed to encourage children to brush correctly and create awareness of the importance of proper oral hygiene.

The American Dental Association and Ad Council created Toothsavers in partnership with 35 other organizations.

“Mobile technology plays a major role in influencing young people’s behavior and is a great fit for this campaign. We’re thrilled to release our first mobile game, which represents our ongoing efforts to use technology to promote health, education and well-being. We look forward to using this app to help kids maintain healthy oral health habits, and have fun while doing it!Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council. 1

The game allows kids to time and track their tooth brushing. It even triggers alerts when it’s time to brush. Users watch fun, two-minute instructional videos while they brush their teeth in the real world. A new character is unlocked each day. The free app can be downloaded at the App Store, Google Play, and at http://2min2x.org/.

In addition to proper tooth brushing, it’s critical that you establish a relationship with a trusted family dentist. If you are looking for a friendly and gentle family dentist in the Palm Harbor area, we invite you to schedule a consultation. We’ll advise you on pediatric dental issues, including thumb-sucking, sealants, mouth guards,  orthodontia, and fluoride treatments.

In addition to children’s dentistry, we offer cutting-edge cosmetic dental procedures for improving smiles for our valued patients of all ages:

  • restorative dentistry
  • endodontics
  • dental implants
  • invisible brace

Thank you for visiting our Prestige Dentistry dental blog. We look forward to serving you and your children.

Why Is Dry Mouth Dangerous For Palm Harbor Dental Patients?

Posted on September 15, 2017

Why Is Dry Mouth Dangerous For Palm Harbor Dental Patients?

Dry mouth caused by the reduction of saliva flow is most common among older adults but people of all ages experience the symptoms of dry mouth at one time or another. This includes a dry, red tongue, difficulty swallowing, and persistent sore throat.

Disease or infection can lead to dry mouth, but a more frequent cause is prescription medications.

Decongestants, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and painkillers are just some of the drugs that list ‘dry mouth’ as a common side effect.

Allergy-prone dental patients complain of dry mouth when they start taking antihistamines during the Trinity hay fever season.

Aside from being an uncomfortable nuisance, untreated dry mouth can cause tooth damage. Adequate saliva keeps the mouth lubricated, wash the food from teeth, and neutralize the acidic environment caused by plaque. Extensive cavities can occur in the absence of saliva for dental patients with chronic dry mouth.

If you’re experiencing chronic symptoms and want to learn about dry mouth treatments, call Prestige Dentistry to schedule an appointment.

Foaming At The Mouth: Are You Brushing Right?

Posted on September 8, 2017

Palm Harbor affordable family dentist

Let’s explore some specifics about brushing. One key to activating the value of toothpastes is creating foam when properly brushing.

Work up a good foam by pre-wetting the toothbrush, then attacking at a 45 rather than 90 degree angle. The foaming helps with dislodging food debris from nooks and crannies in the mouth. Go ahead and swish it around at the completion of brushing to pick up any stragglers. The abrasives in toothpaste are designed to polish the teeth without damaging the enamel.

Because of the abrasives, soft toothbrushes are great for proper brushing. Harder bristles can put the enamel and gum line at risk. When the gum line recedes from aggressive brushing (or any other cause) a patient may notice tooth pain, increased build-up and decay, tooth structure weakening, and in severe cases, tooth loss.

The fluoride in the toothpaste promotes remineralization when the paste has been rubbed around on all surfaces of all teeth in the entire mouth. This takes time so be certain you brush for at least 2-3 minutes.

Remember that flossing is vital and rounds out the 5 minutes each day to give you healthy, pain-free chewing for years to come.

To recap:
Wet soft bristle toothbrush
Use fluoridated toothpaste
Brush at 45 degree angle
Brush gently for 2-3 minutes
Cover every surface of every tooth
Swish around in mouth before spitting out
Floss gently around each tooth and don’t miss the back surface of the rear molars
Rinse out debris

5 Simple Ways To Avoid A Cracked Tooth

Posted on September 1, 2017

cost of dental crowns Trinity

Cracked teeth can be painful, unattractive, and costly to repair. Today’s Prestige Dentistry dental blog contains an easy-to-follow list of tips to keep your teeth whole and strong.

1. Avoiding a cracked tooth means avoiding chewing on hard things. Steer clear of ice, hard candies, hard nuts, popcorn, and beef jerky. Also be careful with pitted fruits – that peach may be soft but if you bite hard into the stone, you could damage a tooth.

2. It is important to protect your teeth while engaging in any physical activity where you mouth can be hit. If you enjoy pick-up basketball games, indoor soccer leagues, rec center flag football, and many other activities, you should be using a well-fitting mouth protector.

3. Don’t use your teeth as a tool. Take a minute to find a pair of scissors before you tear open a package of lunch meat or rip the price tag off a new piece of clothing with your teeth. Use a nutcracker for nuts. A quality dental crown can cost hundreds of dollars.

4. Most people know that grinding your teeth is detrimental, but did you know that it can lead to a cracked tooth? If you know or suspect that you are a tooth grinder, speak with your Trinity dentist so you can address the problem with stress reduction techniques and/or a mouth guard. Frequent headaches or jaw pain can commonly be attributed to nighttime teeth grinding.

5. Lastly, make sure that you visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings. Your dentist can alert you to conditions that might predispose you to cracked teeth, such as having an uneven chewing surface or brittle teeth. Your dentist may also discover tiny cracks you aren’t aware of. These cracks can then be repaired before further damage or decay occurs.

If you already have a cracked tooth, never fear! Treatment is available for cracks small and large. Veneers, cosmetic dental bonding, inlays/onlays, fillings, and dental implants are all used to repair or replace damaged teeth.

We offer the following services:

dental implants
sedation dentistry
restorative dentistry
invisible braces

And more! If you live in the Palm Harbor area, and are seeking a friendly, experienced, and gentle dentist, please give us a call at 727-478-0488.

Is The Humble Toothbrush Obsolete?

Posted on July 28, 2017

electric vs manual toothbrushes East Lake

Many of our tools for everyday living have become antiquated. Online search has replaced the paper phone book. Telephone answering machines have gone the way of manual typewriters. Even the iPod, which was extolled as the culmination of technology just a few years ago, is now gathering dust as individuals play music on their smart phones.

What about the humble toothbrush? Has something flashier and more advanced replaced it? Absolutely not!

“Wait a minute,” you might say, “isn’t an electric toothbrush better than a manual toothbrush? Actually, all toothbrushes, when used properly, are effective at removing food debris and plaque to keep your smile free of dental caries.

When choosing which type of toothbrush to use, examine cost and convenience. Some people argue that even though electric toothbrushes are more costly, you’ll save on dental bills. However, there are no valid studies to back up this conjecture.

Manual toothbrushes are easy to find, whereas not all drugstores sell all types of electric toothbrushes. It is frustrating to spend over a hundred dollars for a top-of-the-line electric toothbrush and then not be able to find a replacement head when needed. People who travel may find that a smaller, manual toothbrush is easier to pack.

Whichever type of toothbrush you choose, you need to be careful about the pressure you put on your gums. Some men and women say that it’s difficult to know how much pressure they use with an electric toothbrush, while others say that because of the fast electrical movements, they tend to be more gentle on their gums. Regardless of the toothbrush model, make sure you get soft bristles and replace it every three to four months.

Special consideration should be taken for men and women with arthritis. Some Palm Harbor area dentists counsel their elderly and arthritic patients to use electric toothbrushes when their manual dexterity is limited. As for youth, once they are old enough, an electric toothbrush may be preferable, but safety should always be the first concern for Trinity parents. Moreover, Prestige Dentistry counsels patients to only purchase dental products that carry the ADA seal.

When it comes to the toothbrush, old school is just fine.

The Prestige Dentistry Guide To Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Posted on July 21, 2017

Wisdom Teeth Extraction For the 65 percent of Palm Harbor adults who detect wisdom teeth in their late teens or early twenties, Prestige Dentistry generally recommends removal. Wisdom teeth can damage adjacent teeth, nerves and, due to their awkward positioning, can increase risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Furthermore, they often come in crooked, crowding the other teeth and affecting the bite.

Wisdom teeth are also difficult to clean, especially if they do not fully erupt, which is a common trouble for many teens and young adults who discover them. This can cause a detrimental infection, as bacteria can be trapped under the skin where brushing and flossing is difficult.

After removal, Prestige Dentistry recommends wisdom teeth extraction patients carefully follow the instructions given.

Bleeding is inevitable and should be expected to last up to three days. Rinsing is counter-productive, but firm pressure should be applied by biting down on the gauze pads to help stop the bleeding.

Swelling following wisdom teeth extraction is a sign that the healing process is progressing normally. Swelling that recedes and then re-appears after a few weeks, however, is a sign of infection. If this happens to you, it is important that you speak with us ASAP.

Prestige Dentistry recommends an examination seven to ten days after the extraction to make sure the wounds are clean and there are no complications. An antibiotic wash can be applied if infection is present.

Keep in mind that many troubles can be avoided if the Palm Harbor patient has his or her wisdom teeth removed when their dentist advises. This is a case where a “let’s wait and see” approach can cause problems.

To schedule a dental exam or a wisdom teeth consultation, contact our Palm Harbor dental practice today.
